Does water respond to your emotions? Dr Masaru Emoto’s studies

Water is a remarkable liquid. Its extraordinary properties are unique to its molecular structure. Scientists have always wondered how these properties can be harnessed for human benefit. One such brilliant mind was Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese scientist, author, and industrialist who revolutionised the idea that our thoughts and intentions could impact the molecular structure of water in his New York Times bestseller, The Hidden Messages in Water.
Dr. Emoto was among the pioneers to demonstrate that water is shaped by our environment, thoughts, and emotions. He explained how water when exposed to loving, benevolent, and compassionate human intentions resulted in aesthetically pleasing and physical molecular formations, while when exposed to fearful and discordant human intentions resulted in disconnected, disfigured, and “unpleasant” physical molecular formations. Furthermore, his research also highlighted that polluted or toxic water when exposed to prayer and good intentions could be altered and restored to its beautifully formed geometric crystals that are found in clean, healthy water. This directly lends credence to the well-known benefits of holy waters of sacred Indian rivers like Ganga and Yamuna.
By using Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology and high-speed photographs, Dr. Emoto presented several photographs of hexagonal water crystals of different shapes and sizes when exposed to phrases of different intentions. In one of his very interesting experiments, he gave a glass of tap water from Tokyo, irregular in molecular shape, to a group of researchers who expressed their gratitude to the water. When later microscopically observed by Dr. Emoto, he found the formation of small hexagonal crystals in the same water.
Dr Emoto hypothesised that water shapes itself differently when exposed to different thoughts, energies and emotions. This is because when we express any emotion, the vibrations emitted from our body coincide with different molecular matter around us including water, shaping its energy in a symmetrical sense.
Though several ancient traditions have spoken about the healing powers of water, Dr Emoto was a trendsetter in attempting scientific experiments to establish the link between consciousness, emotions and water. He also posited that water acts as an absorber or a mirror of human emotions. Just like emotions of gratitude and love leave a sense of contentment or happiness, water crystals reflect the same in a visual sense. And vice versa for negative emotions such as hatred or violence.
It is also pertinent to point out that there have been some controversies about the methodology adopted by Dr Emoto in showing his results and that there was “cherry-picking” to suit specific conclusions. Nonetheless, without deep-diving into those specifics, Dr Emoto’s research certainly opened the field for an exciting set of possibilities, and for a larger understanding of the role of structure of water. The success of his books and the striking visuals served to bring the topic of water and consciousness to the mainstream.
Several scientists and researchers have since engaged in in-depth studies to further this field and enhance our understanding of water. We shall cover more of that in later blogs.
